The Cedar Rapids City Council consists of eight Council members plus the Mayor, all of whom serve four-year terms. The Mayor and three Council members are elected at large, while the remaining five members are elected by voters in their districts.
City Council Districts
Do you know which district you live in? The Linn County Auditor’s Office offers several resources on its Election Services page to help you determine your voting district.
Voter Registration
Voter registration forms are available at the Linn County Auditor’s Office at the County Public Service Center, 935 Second Street SW, Cedar Rapids, or at the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall. The Auditor’s Office, which is the primary contact for voter registration issues, provides additional information at the link below.
ADA Accommodations
The City Clerk’s Office will assist citizens in completing the voter registration form if needed. Staff can read the form to the applicant; provide guidance in filling out the form; make alternate arrangements (offer the use of a clipboard, conference room table, etc.) if the applicant is unable to use the counter to complete the form; and/or send the completed form to the Auditor’s Office for processing.
On the Ballot
During the election cycle, the City Clerk is responsible for making City Council nomination papers and other election information available to potential candidates and submitting ballot language and other materials related to public measures to the County Auditor.
As of 2015, the City Clerk is no longer the filing officer for nomination papers. State law now requires that city candidates file nomination papers with the Linn County Auditor/Commissioner of Elections.
