Fall Parks and Recreation Classes for Special Populations

Cedar Rapids, IA - October 14, 2009 - The Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department is offering the following programs for individuals with special needs:

Holiday Foods - For ages 16+. Participants will learn to prepare traditional Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas foods. Tuesdays, October 20-November 17, 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the Ambroz Recreation Center. Fee is $25 for non-residents or $20 for residents. Program #208103-01.

Halloween Dance - For all ages. Special Olympians, family and friends will want to come join the fun at Iowa Hall, Kirkwood College on Friday, October 20 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes. $5/person. Pay at the door.

Special Olympics Youth Basketball - For ages 8-21. This is a coed, competitive league. District competition will be held in February with winners advancing to the state competition on March 12, 2010. Mondays, November 9-March 8, 7:30-8:45 p.m. at Gibson Elementary. Free. Program #208602-02.

Special Olympics 3-on-3 Basketball - For ages 16+. This program with games played on half courts is for athletes with less ability and who are tired of riding the bench. There will be both district and state Special Olympics competitions. Wednesdays, November 11-March 10, 7:15-8:15 p.m. at Jefferson High School. Free. Program #208603-01.

Special Olympics Adult Basketball - For ages 16+. This is the most competitive Special Olympics Basketball League, played on a full court. District competition will be held in February with winners advancing to state competition on March 12, 2010. Wednesdays, November 11-March 10, 7:15 a.m.-8:30 p.m. at Jefferson High School. Free. Program #208602-01.

Special Olympics Alpine Skiing - For ages 10+. Ski lessons for Special Olympians will be provided at Sundown Mountain with an exciting Special Olympics three-day competition January 11-13. Preregistration is required by 11/20/09. Call Rob Wagner, 286-5799, or go to www.crrec.org for more information.

Learn to Ski or Snowshoe - For ages 8+. Special Olympians who would like to learn to downhill ski or snowshoe will receive two days of instruction at Sundown Mountain in Dubuque on January 11 and 12. A competition will be held January 13. Room and board will be provided. Preregistration is required for program #208604-01 by 11/20/09. The cost is $30 per person. Participants will be transported to Sundown from the Ambroz Center on January 11 at 7:30 a.m. and returned on January 13 at 5:00 p.m.

Destination Winter Wonderland - For ages 16+. This trip to the Festival of Trees in Muscatine on Friday, December 4 from 3:30-9:00 p.m. is sure to spark the holiday spirit in everyone! Christmas shopping, a delicious meal, and a horse and buggy ride are some of the other activities planned. Fee includes meal and transportation. Participants will meet at the Ambroz Center. $40 for residents, $45 for non-residents. Program #208701-01.
