Sergeant Jen Roberts is the Cedar Rapids Police Department's officially designated liaison to the LGBT community and is responsible for addressing LGBT issues. The function of a liaison is not simply to be a resource for the department, but also to be a resource for the public to elevate the concerns of the LGBT community and ensure they are being heard.

The City reports hate crimes statistics to the FBI in all categories, including sexual orientation and gender.

The Police Department tracks the following hate crimes based on sexual orientation:

  • Anti-Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender
  • Anti-bisexual
  • Anti-female homosexual
  • Anti-heterosexual
  • Anti-male homosexual

The classification codes are determined by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. 

There were no reported crimes in any type linked to the aforementioned categories in 2013.  In 2014, there were 2 reported crimes based on race of the victim.  In 2015, there was a vandalism case involving anti-religious graffiti to a vacant home.  There were no reported hate crimes from 2016-2020.
