Cedar Rapids continues to add cycling accommodations across the community, enabling more citizens to enjoy the benefits of traveling by bike. Bike accommodations encourage people to participate in active lifestyles, help reduce the number of cars on the road, positively impact the environment by reducing harmful emission, and help attract younger families and professionals who want to live in connected and active communities.

As a Blues Zones community, Cedar Rapids continues to focus on permanent environmental and policy changes that will encourage residents to make healthy choices.

NEW: Protected Bike Lanes

Cedar Rapids is the first in the state to install protected bike lanes, which separate cyclists from the travel lane by placing parked cars between the bike lane and travel lane. The lanes are installed on 3rd Avenue, between 6th Street SW and 3rd Street SE, as part of the conversion from one-way to two-way streets.

Benefits of protected bike lanes:

  • Creates a more comfortable riding experience for cyclists

  • Provides opportunity for less experienced or younger cyclists to still participate

  • Reduces the chances of being "doored"

  • Reduces conflict with moving travel lane

  • Read more benefits from PeopleforBikes.Org

Signage, as well as pavement markings, will help both motorists and cyclists identify the designated parking and riding areas.
