Residents Invited to Explore River Recreation Opportunities

Residents are invited to participate in a study called “Explore River Recreation” and help examine new recreational options on and along the Cedar River. Residents are encouraged to provide their input on what they’d like to see included in the plan by taking a short online survey.

Take the Survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CedarRiver

The survey will remain open until Friday, February 14, 2020.

Explore River Recreation will invite residents to give input on how they currently use the river and its neighboring parks/trails, and asks residents to help staff prioritize potential improvements that increase water recreation. As part of the survey, residents can also subscribe to receive electronic updates on the project.

The study will build on the community’s interest and feedback already outlined in the Greenways plan and determine more specifically river recreation options that would be feasible and safe, while also being compatible with the City’s Flood Control System.

The study will cover the stretch of Cedar River that goes through Cedar Rapids, including both the 5-in-1-dam and the low head dam south of Prairie Park Fishery. It will also take into consideration river recreation both upstream and downstream. The project will involve a technical analysis of hydrology, dams, and other river conditions, along with an economic impact analysis to develop feasible options for river recreation amenities. Crane Associates, River Restoration, and Anderson Bogert are performing the analysis.

The project kicked off in October 2019 and is expected to be completed by September 2020.
