Suspect Arrested in Reginald Ward Homicide

Law enforcement has arrested a suspect in the Reginald Ward homicide incident that occurred on October 30, 2019.  Through an ongoing investigation by the Cedar Rapids Police Department, a suspect was developed in this case and was identified as Todd Ricky Jenkins, DOB/06-28-1995, age 24.  Jenkins last known address was in the Quad Cities area.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department requested the assistance of the United States Marshals Service to assist in locating the homicide suspect.  On Thursday, March 26, 2020, the United States Marshals Service-Great Lakes Regional Task Force arrested the homicide suspect in a hotel in Aurora, Illinois.  Jenkins attempted to flee out a second-story window of the hotel, but was quickly taken into custody without further incident.  The suspect was in custody at 7:40 p.m. and was transported to the Kane County Jail, and then subsequently transferred to the Kendall County Jail for charges in that jurisdiction. 

Jenkins will be extradited to the Linn County Jail for charges of Murder in the First Degree and Going Armed with Intent.

According to the criminal complaint filed by the Linn County Attorney’s Office, the defendant drove from Davenport, Iowa, to Cedar Rapids with a loaded handgun. When the defendant arrived in Cedar Rapids, he waited outside his ex-girlfriend's apartment to confront the victim, Reginald Ward. When Ward exited the residence, the defendant engaged in a road rage incident with Ward and his girlfriend. The vehicles eventually came to rest at 3132 1st Avenue NE. At that location, the defendant shot and killed Ward. After the shooting, the defendant fled back to the Quad Cities. The defendant was identified by eyewitnesses and surveillance video as the shooter.

Cedar Rapids police officers responded to the report of shots fired at the Kum & Go, 3132 1st Avenue NE, at 7:52 a.m. on Wednesday, October 30, 2019.  When officers arrived on scene, a male victim who had sustained a serious gunshot wound was located.  Officers administered emergency medical care on scene.  Firefighters and ambulance personnel arrived shortly thereafter and the victim was transported to UnityPoint Health-St. Luke’s Hospital.  The victim was identified as Reginald L. Ward, Jr., DOB/04-03-1992, age 27, of Moline, Illinois.  At 4:40 a.m. on Thursday, October 31, 2019, the Linn County Medical Examiner’s Office notified the Police Department that the victim had died.  The Police Department investigation determined this was a targeted incident.
