Suspect Arrested for Attempted Murder

December 8, 2020

Cedar Rapids Police officers were called to 15th Street and 1st Avenue East on Thursday, November 5 at 10:09 p.m. for a 34-year old male who sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg.  Based on the ongoing investigation, a suspect in the case was developed.  Officers arrested the suspect, identified as Dushaun Xavier Scott, DOB/02-17-1993, age 27.  Scott was served with charges of Attempted Murder, Going Armed with Intent, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon with Injury.  Scott was currently in custody at the Linn County Jail and was provided the additional charges on Tuesday, December 8 at 12:40 a.m.

During the shooting investigation, officers located two shell casings.  A subsequent match through the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network was made to the handgun that Scott was in possession of approximately 30 minutes after the shooting.  The investigation found that Scott, without justification or cause, discharged the firearm twice at the 34-year old male victim.  One of the gunshots struck the victim in the upper thigh.  The victim was shot while he was on the front porch of a residence in the 400 block of 18th Street SE.  Scott allegedly approached the victim and asked for a job.  During the encounter, Scott produced the handgun, shot the victim, and fled the scene.  In addition to the confirmation that the shell casings matched the handgun Scott had in his possession, Scott matched the physical description as the shooting suspect when he was apprehended for the Smokin’ Joe’s armed robbery about an hour later.

Scott remains in custody at the Linn County Jail.

Previous Media Release (November 6, 2020, 11:00 a.m. – Case #2020-15780):

On Thursday, November 5 at 10:34 p.m. the City’s Joint Communications Agency received a report of an armed robbery at the Smokin’ Joe’s, 2315 Mount Vernon Road SE.  An individual entered the store, displayed a handgun, and demanded money from the store clerk.  The suspect took cash and stole cigarettes and cigars from the store.

Officers arrived on scene and obtained a description of the robbery suspect.  Officers were able to determine the suspect fled on foot to the south of the store. A Police K9 officer and his K9 partner began a track of the suspect in that direction.  Officers were able to obtain evidence along the route of the track that led to a residence near the intersection of 24th Street and 12th Avenue SE.  The Police K9 indicated that the suspect was in the back yard of one of the residences.

As police officers were establishing a perimeter, a gunshot was fired from the back yard of the residence where the Police K9 indicated that the suspect was located.  Officers were able to take the suspect into custody without incident.  No one was injured by the gunfire that was determined to have originated from a handgun in the suspect’s possession.  Officers were able to recover a 9mm handgun from the suspect.

Cash and items stolen from Smokin’ Joe’s were recovered, along with personal items that belonged to the victim who was robbed at gunpoint.

The suspect was identified as Dushaun Xavier Scott, DOB/02-17-1993, age 27, of Cedar Rapids.  He was arrested for two counts of Robbery-1st Degree, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Reckless Use of a Firearm, and Carrying Weapons.
