Shooting Incident at 2110 Westdale Drive SW (Update – Suspect Arrested)

The Cedar Rapids Police Department has made an arrest in the shooting death of Marisa Doolin that occurred on Tuesday, December 22, 2020.  Working with the Linn County Attorney’s Office, the Police Department presented charges of Involuntary Manslaughter and Tampering with a Witness to Larenzo Laroy Burnett, DOB/05-21-2000, age 20, at the Linn County Jail this morning. Burnett was already in custody on unrelated charges. 

Through the ongoing investigation, it was determined that Burnett intentionally pointed a handgun toward Doolin and accidentally discharged the firearm.  The gunshot wound caused Doolin’s death.  Burnett was arrested for Involuntary Manslaughter, which is a Class D felony. 

In addition, in the course of the investigation, Burnett is accused of verbally threatening a witness by telling the witness not to talk to police and told the witness to be ready for whatever is coming to him.  The threat to the witness occurred on December 28, 2020 at 8:01 p.m. when Burnett made a phone call while incarcerated at the Linn County Jail.  Tampering with a Witness is an aggravated misdemeanor. 

Burnett remains in custody at the Linn County Jail.

The 18-year old female who was wounded in a shooting incident on Tuesday, December 22 at 2110 Westdale Drive SW has been pronounced deceased.  The victim has been identified as Marisa Doolin, DOB/10-15-2002, age 18, of Cedar Rapids.  

The Police Department has been notified by the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office that Doolin was declared legally deceased on Saturday, December 26, 2020. 

There is an ongoing homicide investigation.  There have been no arrests at this time, however there is an active investigation.

Previous Media Release (Sent Tuesday, December 22, 2020): 

Police officers responded to 2110 Westdale Drive SW to a second floor apartment for a shooting incident at 3:25 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22.  Officers arrived on scene to find an 18-year old female who sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound.  Police officers and firefighters, along with Area Ambulance Service personnel, performed emergency medical care.  The victim was transported to a local hospital, and subsequently the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for her injuries.  

There is an ongoing investigation into the shooting.  No arrests have been made at this time.
