Mercy Medical Center and Local Surgeon Partner to Donate Equipment to Police Department

Mercy Medical Center and Local Surgeon Partner to Donate Equipment to Police Department

The Cornyn Family Charitable Fund, a legacy donation established by family members of Dr. Nora Royer, surgeon, and medical director of Mercy Medical Center’s trauma department, has donated $10,829.60 to the Cedar Rapids Police Department.  The funds were used to purchase bleeding control equipment and supplies to help protect Cedar Rapids police officers and provide them with the necessary out-of-hospital emergency care equipment to assist patients of sudden illness or traumatic injury.

With the donation from Dr. Royer’s family, the Cedar Rapids Police Department purchased 30 Emergency Medical Services (EMS) shears, 30 personal hemorrhage control kits, and 260 (C-A-T) Combat Application tourniquets.  In addition, Mercy Medical Center donated 48 cases of protective gloves and two cases of rolled gauze to support similar emergency efforts.

“It’s important to me, and to Mercy’s trauma program, that we follow guidance from the American College of Surgeons in equipping local first responders with the supplies they need to safely control bleeding from traumatic injuries.  The need has been amplified this year with many of the mass-casualty events we’ve seen across the country.  Tourniquets and bleeding control equipment have saved lives in every city in which they have been deployed to officers,” said Dr. Royer.

Cedar Rapids police officers respond to over 3,600 medical emergencies per year.  Officers are part of a tiered emergency response system with the Fire Department and Area Ambulance Service.  Police officers are often first at the scene of medical emergencies such as heart attacks, strokes, choking incidents, and overdoses, as well as incidents that involve traumatic injury.

Police Chief Wayne Jerman, Police Sergeant Michelle Omar, and representatives from Mercy Medical Center will participate in a news conference to discuss the benefits of this donation and display the equipment that was purchased.
