Police Department Promotion and Annual Awards Ceremony

The Cedar Rapids Police Department will hold its Promotion and Annual Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, March 21st.  

The ceremony honors officers who have earned promotions and will include the presentation of several awards, including: 

  • Commendation for Valor - presented for an extraordinary act of courage without regard to personal safety while in actual combat with an armed and dangerous adversary.

  •  Commendation for Heroism or Life Saving – presented for the performance of an outstanding arrest where the officer’s safety is in imminent danger and effort is met by an armed and dangerous adversary, or for an act of outstanding courage which results in the saving of a life.

  • Commendation of Merit – presented for an arrest or any police service which is beyond the requirement of regular police duties or routines.

  • Commendatory Letters – presented for demonstrating special faithfulness or perseverance during regular police duties.

  • Lifesaving Award – presented for the performance of an act demonstrating use of any skill, which results in the saving of a life. 

Annual Awards will also be presented for Officer of the Year, Recruit Officer of the Year, Reserve Officer of the Year, James Bruner Volunteer of the Year, Service Excellence, Community Service, and Chief’s Award.  Also, the four recipients of Police Department Employee of the Quarter during 2016 will be recognized. 

The media is invited to attend the event.  The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21st in the 4th Floor Ballroom at Cedar Rapids Veteran’s Memorial Building, 50 2nd Avenue Bridge.  It is recommended that media arrive by 6:30 p.m. which is just prior to the Awards Ceremony presentations.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department Honor Guard will be participating in the ceremony.  There will be remarks by Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett, City Manager Jeff Pomeranz, and Chief of Police Wayne Jerman.
