Shooting Incident at 424 Fairway Terrace SE Update

Cedar Rapids police officers responded to 424 Fairway Terrace SE on Wednesday, June 21st at 1:28 p.m. for the report of a shooting.  Officers were advised that a 26-year old male victim had shot a burglar inside his home. 

Police arrived at the residence and found two individuals who had sustained gunshot wounds including the victim, Ethan Paul Deyo, DOB/12-11-1990, age 26.  Deyo advised officers that a suspect had entered his residence and was armed with a handgun.  The suspect, identified as Sherman Hopkins, DOB/03-01-1974, age 43, had allegedly entered the residence and threatened Deyo with a handgun. 

Deyo and Hopkins were involved in a physical altercation.  During the physical altercation, Deyo managed to get the handgun from Hopkins and fire the weapon at Hopkins several times.  Deyo sustained a gunshot wound during the altercation as well. 

Based upon the subsequent investigation, investigators have charged Hopkins with Burglary-1st Degree, Robbery-1st Degree, and Kidnapping-1st Degree. 

Hopkins was transported to the Linn County Jail after being released from a local hospital on today’s date. 

Investigators do not believe that this was a random act.  There is an active, ongoing investigation and additional details are not available at this time.
