City Accepting Hotel-Motel Tax Fund Grant Program Applications

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – January 22, 2018 – The City of Cedar Rapids is now accepting applications for Fiscal Year 2019-2021 Hotel-Motel Tax Revenue Funds. Completed applications are due no later than April 16, 2018 by 12:00 p.m. The application is available here.

All entities, with the exception governmental entities, must be non-profit as recognized by the Internal Revenue Code of the United States to be eligible for the consideration of the allocation of these funds. Grants are awarded in four categories:

Primary- Applicants are City-owned facilities housing activity that is primarily recreational, cultural, destination marketing or entertainment oriented.

Community Culture and Education- Applicants are educational, cultural, and entertainment-oriented entities that are mission-driven and improve the overall quality of life in Cedar Rapids. Organizations must have 501(c)(3) status under the Internal Revenue Code. Applicants present regular hours open to the public or a regular series of events open to the public.

Community Recreation and Events- Applicants are community recreational and event-oriented entities particularly for recreation activities, annual events or limited time events which illustrate a positive impact on the quality of life. Organizations must be 501(c)(3).

New and Emerging Organizations and Events- Applicants are limited to a one-time application request for a new or emerging organization or event. The program or event shall show uniqueness, fulfill an unmet need or program, and have a positive impact on the quality of life. Organizations must be 501(c)(3) or have applied for such status to be eligible in this category.

In Fiscal Year 2018, the City awarded a total of $1.7 million to 25 nonprofit organizations through this program. The Hotel-Motel Tax Ordinance imposes a hotel and motel tax rate of 7 percent upon the gross receipts from the renting of any and all rooms, apartments, or sleeping quarters in any hotel, motel, inn, public lodging house, rooming house, tourist court, or in any place where sleeping accommodations are furnished to transient guests for rent. The tax applies only within the corporate boundaries of the City of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
