AmeriCorps to Design and Install Rain Gardens for Free this Summer

Through a unique partnership with AmeriCorps, Cedar Rapid residents have the opportunity to win a rain garden design and installation for free this summer.

Rain-Garden-home-webIf selected, AmeriCorps will design and install a rain garden this summer on the resident’s property. Rain gardens have numerous benefits:

  • Reduce rainwater runoff, which helps reduce flood risk
  • Conserve water
  • Filter rain water
  • Improve water quality
  • Aesthetically pleasing

Winners will be selected based on the number of applicants, priority locations for rain gardens, and site soil conditions.

Applications can be found on the City’s website
Applications are due March 27, 2018

“Rain gardens are a beautiful way to help support the City’s efforts of reducing our risk of localized stormwater flooding,” says Cara Matteson, Stormwater Coordinator for the City of Cedar Rapids. “This is a great opportunity to take advantage of not only the City’s cost-share program, but of a professional service willing to design and install the rain garden for free.”

Property owners are responsible for the cost of materials (flowers and plants, stones, etc.); however, rain gardens are eligible for the City’s Cost Share Program, which includes up to 50% reimbursement. Residents are asked to apply for reimbursement prior to the rain garden installation.
