Volunteer for the Parks and Recreation Department. The Department uses many volunteers to help maintain golf courses, plant and weed gardens, keep our parks clean and beautiful, assist with special events, coach a sports team, and more. See the positions below to find an opportunity that best suits your talents:

Golf
Learn More and Apply

Golf Cart Volunteer    
10-12 hours/week Volunteers mulching and planting at a golf course
Cleans, inspects, properly parks and secures carts at the end of the day. Duties also include washing and fueling carts.

Golf Concessions Grill Operator     10-12 hours/week
Assists clubhouse concessions staff with food preparation using safe grilling practices. Saturdays and Sundays 10 AM - 3 PM. May be required to help with outings and tournaments on other dates.

Golf Driving Range Picker     10-12 hours/week
Collects range balls off the driving range. Cleans and returns the balls to the bin.

Golf Maintenance Volunteer     10-12 hours/week
Assists maintenance team with daily tasks. Position requires general knowledge of the golf course and golf etiquette, ability to bend over, light lifting, and good communication skills.

Golf On-Course Attendant     10-12 hours/week
Assists staff with daily maintenance and monitors golfers’ play.

Golf Starter     10-12 hours/week
Assists staff in managing the golfers and facilitating their access to the golf course.

Noelridge Greenhouse

Greenhouse Volunteer     Hours Vary Based on Availability Volunteers planting a tree
Duties include clipping, repotting, transplanting, taking cuttings, and maintaining the greenhouse and outdoor plants. Shifts are 10 AM - Noon and 1 - 3 PM, Monday - Friday (no Thursday afternoons).

Greenhouse Special Events Volunteer     Hours Vary
Assist with Noelridge Greenhouse events. Duties include greeting the public, set up, and clean up.

Old MacDonald's Farm
Learn More and Apply

Old MacDonald's Farm Garden Volunteer     Hours Vary, May through October
Assist with maintaining the urban gardens at Old MacDonald's Farm. Duties include planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and clean up.

Old MacDonald's Farm Event Volunteer     Hours Vary, May through October
Assist with running games and activities for various large-scale events at the Farm. Volunteers must enjoy working with kids and have a positive attitude.

Parks

Trail Steward    
Hours Vary Based on Availability
Large and small groups of all ages. Duties include, but are not limited to, picking up litter, removing debris, and trimming branches.

Park Steward     Hours Vary Based on Availability
Large and small groups of all ages. Duties include, but are not limited to, picking up litter, cleaning, painting, mulching, and weeding.

Prairie Steward     Hours Vary Based on Availability
Assist Parks staff with identifying and removing noxious or problem weeds.


Recreation

Special Olympics Coach     10 weeks - 25 hours/sport 
Assist in coaching a variety of sports throughout the year.  One-hour practices are usually held on Wednesday evenings or Saturday mornings. Ten-week commitment, approximately 25 hours per sport coached. Training and background check provided.

Ushers Ferry Program Volunteer     Hours Vary A volunteer wearing period costume baking cookies in the wood stove at Ushers Ferry
Assists with Ushers Ferry’s programs and events. Duties include greeting the public, set up, and clean up.

Ushers Ferry Park Steward     Hours Vary Based on Availability
Large and small groups of all ages. Duties include, but are not limited to, picking up litter, painting, mulching, weeding and cleaning exhibit buildings and program areas.

Ushers Ferry Historic Interpreter/Guide     Hours Vary
Greets visitors, leads and gives tours of village homes and businesses. Demonstrates historic skills or activities during special events and weekends.

Youth Sports Coach     Hours Vary 
Organizes and runs team practices on weeknights and possibly Saturday mornings, teaching the basic skills of the sport. Practice plans will be provided and volunteer coach training is available. Past experience and knowledge of the sport is encouraged, but not required. Must enjoy working with kids, have plenty of energy, and a positive attitude with a focus on having fun.

Special Events Volunteer     Hours Vary 
Assist with Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation events. Duties include greeting the public, set up/tear down, handing out information or treats, and helping with games and activities.
