The Cedar Rapids Water Pollution Control Facility received grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Program and the State of Iowa Hazard Grant Mitigation Program to install a flood protection system for the facility. The flood protection system is expected to be in place by the fall of 2014.

WPC Flood Wall Protection - Site Plan

Key Features of the Flood Protection System

Pump Station: The pump station will allow the facility to remain operational during high-water events allowing the treated wastewater and stormwater that falls on the facility to exit the plant.  Without this critical element to the protection system, the facility would experience internal flooding.

Storm Sewer Return: The storm sewer modifications will allow stormwater falling on the site to be pumped over the wall to avoid internal flooding.

Flood Wall: The flood wall is designed to protect the facility from river levels as high as 33 feet.  The flood wall is located where space did not allow for the construction of an earthen berm.

Flood Berm: The earthen berm is designed to work in conjunction with the flood wall to protect the facility from river levels as high as 33 feet.
