City of Cedar Rapids

The Cedar Rapids City Council has created a commission of residents and service providers that work or reside in Cedar Rapids, Iowa known as the Affordable Housing Commission, which reports to the City Council Development Committee.

Purpose:
The purpose of the Affordable Housing Commission is to identify the nature and scope of the housing needs of low and moderate-income residents in Cedar Rapids and recommend to the City Council effective strategies for collaborating to meet those needs.

Function and Responsibility:
The functions of the Affordable Housing Commission are to:

• Identify the nature and scope of housing needs of low and moderate-income residents.
• Recommend effective strategies to City Council for collaborating to meet those needs.
• Identify legislative issues regarding trends or barriers to access programs.
• Review and make recommendations to the City Council on key affordable housing issues, such as the annual Housing Market Analysis and State applications.

• The Affordable Housing Commission (AHC) will consist of no more than 21 members appointed by the Cedar Rapids Mayor upon the advice and consent of the City Council. 
• 13 members will be representatives from social service agencies that serve the citizens of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
• 4 members will be representatives from professional service agencies that serve the citizens of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
• 4 members will be Cedar Rapids, Iowa residents; one representative from each quadrant.
