Applications for the 2023 Citizens' Fire Academy have closed.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department offers citizens a unique way of experiencing the firefighting career with the Citizens' Fire Academy. The Academy includes 15 hours of instruction and practical experience. The goal of the Academy is to create a better understanding of firefighting activities and how the department operates. Citizens will find that firefighting is more than putting out fires, but also includes rescue operations, emergency medical services, fire prevention and education. Activities in which citizens may participate include: Vehicle Extrication, Emergency Medical Services, Hose Handling, Aerial Operations, and Live Fire Burn. The cost for the Academy is $50. 

The 2023 Citizens' Fire Academy will take place Monday evenings (with the exception of Labor Day), 6:00PM-9:00PM, August 28th-September 25th. Dates for the academy are listed below.

Applications for the 2023 Citizens' Fire Academy have closed.  CRFD staff will contact participants to let them know if they have been chosen or not. There are a limited number of spots available. 

This is not an application to be a paid Cedar Rapids Firefighter. Participation in the Citizens' Academy does not affect the likelihood of being hired as a Cedar Rapids Firefighter. For more information, please contact Sydney Wright, Public Education Specialist, 319-286-5218.
