The Cedar Rapids Police Department is actively recruiting certified law enforcement officers to join our department.  Known as lateral transfers, a certified law enforcement officer from another agency, including in or out of the state of Iowa, can be hired by the Cedar Rapids Police Department with step pay consistent with the total number of years of service that you have earned as a certified peace officer. 

Applicants will need to complete the Civil Service hiring process. 

The incentive applies to pay only.  Seniority and vacations, for example, will not be transferred.  However, lateral transfers will not be required to attend a Police Academy.  Out-of-state applicants will need to pass the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Certification by Exam within 120 days of hire. 

We are looking for officers interested in making a difference in their community.  Applications will be accepted between May 10, 2021 and June 7, 2021.  The online application is available on the Human Resources Page.

We will be running an abbreviated recruiting period with the following tentative dates:

  • Applications accepted - May 10- June 7, 2021
  • Physical Agility and MMPI - June 12 or June 16, 2021
  • Pre-polygraph Interview - June 24, 2021
  • Civil Service Oral Interview - June 29, 2021
  • Polygraphs - June 30-July 9, 2021
  • Backgrounds - July 12-July 26, 2021
  • Conditional Offers - July 29, 2021
  • Medicals - July 29-August 12, 2021
  • Date of Hire - August 30, 2021

With the lateral transfer program, the incoming wage will range from $58,489 - $87,027.  An officer with five years of certified law enforcement experience will start at $71,177 and an officer of ten years will start at $87,027.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department has an authorized strength of 227 sworn officers.  The department operates on four patrol shifts, 10 hour/4 day work week.  We have many areas of opportunity including:
