32nd Street NE from Carlisle Street to Oakland Road Pavement Reconstruction

Project Phase:
Construction
Construction Start: May 2023
Construction Update: (9.21.23)

All of the roadway paving is complete at the intersection of 32nd Street and Oakland Road. Sod has also been placed in the parkway on both sides of 32nd Street between Center Point Road and the Hy-Vee / Family Dollar driveways.

The intersection of 32nd Street and Oakland Road will re-open to traffic on Monday afternoon, September 25th. A few items to note:

  • Only one lane of traffic will be available in each direction
  • The intersection will operate as an all-way stop, as traffic signals are not yet installed
  • Through traffic is encouraged to continue to use the detour around the construction area, as delays are expected

As we enter the final phase of this project, expect to see the construction of sidewalk ramps at the intersection, backfill, and sod, permanent pavement markings, and installation of traffic signals.

Thank you for your continued patience.

Project Background:

These improvements are part of a larger effort to improve 32nd Street from I-380 to 1st Avenue. The intersection of 32nd Street and Center Point Road was reconstructed in 2019 and the City had a joint project with the Iowa DOT at the east and west ends of the 32nd Street/Glass Road bridge over I-380 in 2021. This project expands those improvements further east towards 1st Avenue.

Planned Improvements:
This project includes pavement reconstruction, sidewalk infill, water main extension, storm and sanitary sewer improvements, and traffic signal replacement. 32nd Street between Carlisle Street and the west side of Oakland Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction for most of the project. Once this segment of roadway is reconstructed, the intersection of Oakland Road will be completely closed from the west side of the intersection through the Hy-Vee gas driveway. All businesses will be open and access to them will be maintained throughout the project.
