The City of Cedar Rapids Public Works Department is an APWA-Accredited Agency.
The Cedar Rapids Public Works Department achieved accreditation in February 2023 after demonstrating 100% compliance with 322 practice statements in a rigorous evaluation process. During the accreditation review process, evaluators considered asset management, project planning, design, construction, and operation and maintenance of the City’s rights-of-way and Public Works infrastructure.
Upon their visit to Cedar Rapids, evaluators indicated the City's Public Works Department was the first agency in their extensive experience to achieve 100% full compliance during the week of actual evaluations. In addition, the evaluation team identified 11 Model Practices for inclusion in APWA's online accreditation community library to serve as a resource for other agencies across the nation.
Cedar Rapids is among more than 175 other accredited public works agencies throughout North America and Canada. In the State of Iowa, there are currently only four APWA-Accredited Public Works Agencies. Accreditation benefits include an established, agency-wide culture of continuous business improvement; improved operational performance; team building and staff development; succession planning; increased institutional knowledge; strengthened employee retention; central locations for documentation; reduced liability; lowered insurance premiums; and improved communications. It is reasonable to assume accreditation can also positively influence bond-rating considerations.
City Manager Jeff Pomeranz emphasized, “The significance of accreditation within our organization cannot be overstated. More than an accolade, accreditation demonstrates our Departments’ willingness to undergo continuous evaluation and improvement.”
The Public Works Department acknowledges its partners across all City Departments for assisting in the accreditation process.
Public Works Director Bob Hammond indicated the importance of teamwork throughout the process, saying, "This achievement is the result of the great efforts every member of our team makes each day to ensure the highest possible level of service to our community. It is an honor to serve alongside such hard-working, dedicated professionals."
Cedar Rapids was invited to share its story in an article featured in the nationwide quarterly magazine distributed by the American Public Works Association (APWA). The article highlights our Public Works Department’s journey to accreditation, addressing challenges such as flooding and the Derecho along the way. The piece also showcases Cedar Rapids’ distinction as one of few communities in the nation to hold top accreditations across its Fire, Police, Parks and Recreation, and Public Works departments.
