Household hazardous waste (HHW) includes products that we use on a daily basis that could pose a health risk to people or the environment if not handled or disposed of properly.  This includes products such as cleaners, detergents, paints, stains, fertilizers, and pesticides

Tips for Keeping HHW Out of Our Stormwater

  • Read the label.  If you see a cautionary notice then that product will become a household hazardous waste.  Care should be taken for handling these products and if not used up entirely, must be disposed of properly.

  • Buy only what you need.  Save yourself time in disposing of hazardous products and purchase only what you know you will need.

  • Store products.  Safely store products keeping them out of reach of children and pets.  Make sure they are closed and stored in a way that will prevent any leaking.

  • Dispose of products properly.  Never dispose of hazardous waste by dumping the down a storm drain, on the street, curb, or lawn.  The Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency accepts household hazardous waste free of charge from Linn County residents.  No appointment is necessary.
