Mount Vernon Road SE from 14th Street to 20th Street

Progress continues to be made on paving, with the focus this past week on the new asphalt in the north lanes. The asphalt paving is expected to be complete at the end of this week and the permanent pavement markings will follow.

Early next week, the inside lanes will be closed and traffic will run in the outside lanes – one lane in each direction. This will allow for the construction of the center median, including curb and gutter, colored concrete, and decorative concrete medians.

Traffic Impacts:

• Traffic is running head-to-head in the south lanes  - NOW THROUGH EARLY-WEEK OF 10/2
• The inside lanes will be closed and there will be one lane of traffic in each direction in the outside lanes – BEGINNING EARLY-WEEK OF 10/2
• 14^thStreet is right-in / right-out
• The north leg of 15^thStreet is fully open
• The south leg of 15^thStreet is right-in / right-out

Project Background:

Planning for the improvements to Mount Vernon Road SE began in 2016 with the launch of public outreach for the Mount Vernon Road Corridor Action Plan. Through that planning process, significant public input was received related to the Mount Vernon Road corridor. The plan was adopted by City Council in 2017 with priority action items including improving aesthetics, reducing visual clutter, improving traffic safety, and increasing walkability. The proposed construction project was developed in accordance with these goals 


Planned Improvements:
This project includes pavement widening; raised medians with aesthetic improvements; new sidewalk and existing sidewalk repairs; ADA sidewalk ramps; an asphalt overlay; storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water improvements; traffic signal upgrades; and traffic safety alterations to the intersections at 15th and 19th Streets. The section from 14th Street to 17th Street will be constructed in 2023 and the section from 17th Street to 20th Street will be constructed in 2024.
