Storm Drain Mural Project

The Request for Proposals is currently open at the Metro Economic Alliance's website and closes on July 1.  Eight new storm drains will be painted this summer, 2019, and we want your submission!

In May 2018 artists completed murals on seven downtown storm drains. The educational art installations reinforce the important message — only rain belongs in a storm drain!

Storm drains can become hot spots for illicit dumping—grease, paint, cigarettes, and more. Stormwater pollutants make their way to the Cedar River without treatment, affecting the river’s health. Aquatic life, recreational life, and drinking water all rely on healthy waterways.

The project was a collaboration between the City of Cedar Rapids, Iowa BIG, the Downtown District, Paint Iowa Beautiful, and Diamond Vogel. to install educational murals on seven downtown storm drains.
