Suspect Arrested After Shots Fired Incident

On Sunday, April 4, 2021, at 12:58 a.m. Cedar Rapids Police officers were dispatched to Hazzard County American Saloon, 402 2nd Avenue SE, for the report of two individuals outside of the bar fighting and one of the individuals was armed with a handgun.  Officers arrived on scene and did not locate anyone fighting, but they heard a gunshot coming from near the intersection of 2nd Avenue and 3rd Street SE. 

Officers were advised that the individual who had fired the gunshot was observed getting into a white pickup truck.  Officers were able to make a traffic stop of a white 2011 Ford F150 in the 400 block of 3rd Avenue SE. 

The driver of the suspect vehicle was identified as Daniel Richard Turnis, DOB/06-08-1991, age 29, of Cedar Rapids.  Turnis was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated-1st Offense and transported to the Linn County Jail. 

Based upon an investigation and the recovery of a 9mm handgun, a passenger in the vehicle, identified as Devoniere Roshawn Jackson, DOB/10-01-1993, age 27, of Cedar Rapids, was identified as the individual who discharged the firearm.  Jackson was arrested for Possession of a Firearm While Intoxicated, Reckless Use of a Firearm, Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, and Possession of a Controlled Substance-Marijuana.  He also had a warrant through the Webster County Sheriff’s Office for Failure to Pay Child Support.   He was transported to the Linn County Jail. 

The handgun was recovered from the pickup truck and a shell casing was recovered from the roadway. 

No injuries or property damage was reported.
