Cedar Rapids firefighters were called to a reported fire at Geneva Tower, 310 5th Street Southeast, Cedar Rapids, just after midnight on February 20th, 2022.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the 9th floor that quickly spread to the 10th. Firefighters used a combination of external firefighting apparatus including high-rise ladders and suppression systems in the building to attack the fire.

A total building evacuation was required. All residents were moved to a nearby church. One resident was transported to a specialty treatment center for smoke inhalation and possible heat-related injuries. A small but unknown number of residents were taken to local hospitals for treatment of smoke exposure and medical issues.

No injuries were reported by firefighters.

Firefighting operations ceased just before 3:00 a.m. No injuries to firefighters were reported.

Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire.
