CRPD Chief Wayne Jerman is IPCA Executive of the  Year

May 27, 2022

Cedar Rapids Chief of Police Wayne Jerman has been named "Law Enforcement Executive of the Year" for 2021 by the Iowa Police Chiefs Association (IPCA).  He received the recognition from the IPCA at their annual conference Thursday night in Coralville.  The award recognized his contributions many to the City and the State of Iowa since coming to Cedar Rapids in 2012.

"Chief Jerman has strengthened relationships with the community and ensured that officers have adequate mental health training. He created and implemented the Police Community Action Team, a specialized team of officers tasked with gaining the trust and cooperation of residents in at-risk neighborhoods. He also created the Police Chief’s Advisory Committee, a body of community members who review and offer feedback on department practices, policies, initiatives, training, outreach programs, and police-related incidents. He led the creation of a partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness to provide training and assistance to officers through the Crisis Intervention Team."

They also credited Chief Jerman's ongoing commitment to the profession of Law Enforcement; a career he started in 1979.

"Chief Jerman has been a long-time supporter of the Iowa Police Chiefs Association and served as the legislative committee chair from 2016-2021. During that time period Chief Jerman kept IPCA members apprised of legislative issues, represented the IPCA at the State Capital and was instrumental in lobbying for legislation to improve the safety of our communities and the law enforcement profession. Chief Jerman has an extraordinary dedication to law enforcement and public service and he has been an impactful leader in his community and the State of Iowa. Chief Jerman is an active member of several professional organizations including the Police Executive Research Forum and the International Association of Chiefs of Police."

City Manager Jeff Pomeranz attended the ceremony and commented on the Chief’s influence on the profession of Law Enforcement.

“The City is fortunate to have leadership of Chief Jerman's caliber leading our Police Department.  Tonight's recognition by the Iowa Police Chiefs Association is a well-deserved acknowledgement of his unparalleled expertise and specifically, his impact on the state of policing both for Cedar Rapids and for Iowa.”

The IPCA organization works to promote professional standards in the L.E. community and is used as a resource  by individual cities, the Iowa League of Cities, the Iowa Legislature, the Governor's Office, the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. IPCA expertise is also sought out by communities across Iowa to assist in the promotion and selection of current and future police administrators and executives.
