16th Avenue Bridge of Lions Ribbon Cutting Today

July 22, 2022

City officials will mark a milestone in permanent flood control during a ribbon cutting for the 16th Avenue Bridge of Lions on Friday, July 22, at 2 p.m. The public and media are invited to celebrate and acknowledge the completion of 16th Avenue Bridge Flood Control System projects and the public officials who have advocated for its completion.

The celebration will occur on the 16th Avenue Bridge over the Cedar River. Speakers will include Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell, City Manager Jeff Pomeranz, Lt. Col. John M. Fernas of the US Army Corps of Engineers, and Monica Vernon of The District.

Work on the 16th Avenue Bridge of Lions included floodgates on either end of the bridge with connections to adjacent flood walls and levees. The bridge connects the growing New Bohemia and Czech Village areas on either side of the river. New decorative archways over the bridge serve as gateway features — connecting east to west.
