Celebrate Halloween with Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation
October 3, 2022
Cedar Rapids, IA – October 3, 2022 – Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department is offering several special fall and Halloween events during the month of October that will appeal to a wide-range of ages and interests. Events include Harvest Hayrack Night, Safe Halloween for Kids, Spooky Hayrack Night, Friday Night Spooky Swim, and the 30th annual Special Populations Halloween Dance.
“Harvest Hayrack Night” is Wednesday, October 12 at Ushers Ferry Historic Village, 5925 Seminole Valley Trail NE. Families will enjoy fall fun including hayrack rides, drinking hot cocoa around a bonfire, and making crafts. An earlier program called “Sunset Pumpkins” is held from 5-6:30 p.m. for families with young children who have a hard time staying up late (older children are welcome, too). The later session, “Night Owls,” is from 6:30-8 p.m. The fee is $20/family (up to four people), $6/single or additional person, and free admission for children age 5 and under. Advance registration is available but not required.
The popular “Safe Halloween for Kids” at Ushers Ferry is Sunday, October 23 from 1-4 p.m. This old-fashioned Halloween event includes trick-or-treating, games, and costume contests. Admission is free this year. Advance registration is encouraged, but not required.
New this year is “Spooky Hayrack Night” at Ushers Ferry on Wednesday, October 26 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. In addition to the hayrack ride, visitors will enjoy a children’s craft, s’mores and hot cocoa around the bonfire, and a very special after-dark tour with one of the village’s mysterious residents. They’ll hear some of the rarely told stories and history of Ushers Ferry and Linn County. Advance registration is required for program #214206-01. The fee is $6/person for residents or $7/person for non-residents. Admission for ages 5 and under is free.
Swimmers of all ages can celebrate Halloween with a splash at the annual “Spooky Swim” at Bender Pool, 940 14th Avenue SE, on Friday, October 28 from 6-8:30 p.m. Participants will receive a bag of treats as they leave. Admission is free this year.
The 30th annual “Special Populations Halloween Dance” co-sponsored with the ARC of East Central Iowa is Friday, October 28 from 7-9 p.m. at Northwest Recreation Center, 1340 11th Street NW. People of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend and wear a costume. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. Admission is $5 per person at the door.
