Cedar Rapids Police Department to Hold Citizens Police Academy

Cedar Rapids Police Department to Hold Citizens Police Academy

The Cedar Rapids Police Department is gearing up for the 2017 Citizens Police Academy training program that will begin on Wednesday, September 13th.  This program is directed toward citizens who live, work or visit the Cedar Rapids community.  The goal of the Academy is to increase understanding between citizens and their police department.  The Police Department is not training citizens to be police officers, but rather helping participants gain an understanding of how the Police Department accomplishes its mission on a daily basis.

Classes meet on Wednesday evenings for three hours for ten weeks beginning on September 13th. Class attendees receive information and instruction on a variety of topics such as use of force, defensive tactics, narcotics enforcement, special operations, and criminal investigations. Also there will be demonstrations by the Special Response Team and K-9 Unit, and much more.  All of this is enhanced by the opportunity to ride along with an officer and engage in a simulation scenario hosted by the Marion Police Department.

Participants must be at least 18 years of age. An investigation of an applicant’s criminal history will be completed prior to acceptance into the Citizens Police Academy. Advance registration is required. The program is $30 and is limited to 20 participants.

Register now as the class is filling up quickly!  If you are interested in attending the Cedar Rapids Citizens Police Academy, contact the Cedar Rapids Police Department at 319-286-5439, email c.hamblin@cedar-rapids.org or go to the Cedar Rapids Police Department’s website at www.cedar-rapids.org/police and download a brochure/application.
