Upcoming Short-Term Traffic Impacts to 17th Avenue in Czech Village

November 27, 2023

Minor traffic impacts are expected in the Czech Village Area on Tuesday, December 5 and Wednesday, December 6. City contractors will be conducting soil borings to collect soil samples in the area as part of preparations for the LightLine Loop project.

The sample drilling will occur along A Street SW, 17th Avenue SW, and within the parking lot just behind Czech Town Station. The road and parking lot will remain open and all businesses in the corridor will be accessible. Lane reductions and minor parking impacts may occur while construction equipment and crews are in the area.  Drivers are encouraged to take care, slow down, and avoid distractions while in the area.

This fieldwork was scheduled outside of the Thanksgiving holiday sales timeframe in an effort to minimize impacts to local businesses.

The LightLine Loop project is currently in the design phase. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in spring 2025.

About the LightLine Loop project:

The LightLine Loop project aims to envision and plan for the future of Cedar Rapids. With this, the City of Cedar Rapids is revitalizing the Czech Village on the west side of the Cedar River. This project will revive a large area of nearly vacant parcels that was damaged by severe flooding in 2018. The space is being reimagined as a vibrant community gathering place ideal for both residents and visitors alike. This project is an extension of the adopted 2019 Czech Village/New Bohemia Action Plan, which takes a comprehensive look at the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for the area. The LightLine Loop project is anticipated to be complete by the Fall of 2026. More information can be found on the project website, CityofCR.com/LightLineLoop
