City of Cedar Rapids to Seek Input on National Community Survey in Two Phases

February 6, 2024

Cedar Rapids residents will again be invited to respond to a comprehensive quality of life survey conducted by the City this year. The National Community Survey™ (The NCS™) is designed to provide information about how City government is serving residents, gauge perceptions of the City of Cedar Rapids, and make comparisons with peer cities. Administered by the National Research Center (NRC) at Polco, the survey includes questions about quality of life in the community, local policies, demographics, ratings of local government services and resident use of services.

There will be two phases for gathering responses from Cedar Rapids community members. During the first phase, a portion of randomly selected households will receive instructions on how to complete the survey by mail. The confidential responses will be weighted and analyzed to provide a scientific, statistically accurate snapshot of community sentiment.

During the second phase in March, a public, opt-in version of the survey will be posted online for any interested resident to share their feedback. Residents who do not receive an invitation to participate in the scientific survey sample can use this option to participate instead. We will share a link to the public version of the survey in March.

Those who receive the survey through mail should respond according to directions in their letter or postcard. We request these residents do not respond to the online survey when posted in March.

Survey data will allow the City of Cedar Rapids to compare results and benchmark residents’ opinions against other communities across the country where applicable.

The City developed this survey in consultation with the National Research Center. This is the fifth time this survey will be administered in Cedar Rapids; the first was in 2016. The survey has been collected every two years since.
